The first rule of Art

Art can’t hurt you.

  • As one who has returned from an art-cheology expedition to the underbowels of the Russian subway, thankful to have brought my magnum, I have the authority to say that that “First Rule” is bogus.

  • Eric Booth, arts-in-ed guru and teaching artist of the gods, has often compared art and entertainment, suggesting that entertainment reinforces the world we know, and art challenges the notions of the world as we understand it.

This might not mean that art always hurts, but maybe sometimes makes you uncomfortable, or takes you to a place of vulnerability.

If something is totally safe and doesn’t challenge me, it may be fabulous entertainment (which is not something I turn my nose up at, btw), but I’ll be less inclined to call it art.
